{"id":963,"date":"2009-04-10T15:38:44","date_gmt":"2009-04-10T22:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tengrrl.com\/blog\/?p=963"},"modified":"2009-04-12T21:45:12","modified_gmt":"2009-04-13T04:45:12","slug":"poem-10-theme-for-english-b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tengrrl.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/10\/poem-10-theme-for-english-b\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem 10: &#8220;Theme for English B&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;Langston Hughes&#8217;s &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/poets.org\/viewmedia.php\/prmMID\/15614\" target=\"_blank\">Theme for English B<\/a>&quot; isn&#8217;t my favorite Hughes&#8217; works, but it so perfectly describes the student&#8217;s dilemma when writing for a teacher who will never understand him that I&nbsp;think every teacher, especially every writing teacher, should read this poem.<\/p>\n<p>Since I did write a <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.ncte.org\/store\/books\/129014.htm\" target=\"_blank\">book on the topic<\/a>, I&#8217;m compelled to address the assignment that begins the poem:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\n    <i>Go home and write<\/i>\r\n    <i>a page tonight.<\/i>\r\n    <i>And let that page come out of you--<\/i>\r\n    <i>Then, it will be true.<\/i>\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Poetically, it&#8217;s a lovely thing. As a writing assignment, it lacks a great deal of detail and support. Every writing teacher should note the speaker&#8217;s difficulty at pinning down the details of the assignment&mdash;Whose idea of truth?&nbsp;Will the teacher understand truths that don&#8217;t match his or her views of the world?<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately the speaker draws conclusions about truths, both personal and social.
