Genealogy isn&#146;t exactly my area of expertise. <\/p>\n<p>That&#146;s why I&#146;m loving the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wolframalpha.com\/2010\/06\/21\/my-cousins-cousins-nieces-grandfather-said-to-just-ask-wolframalpha\/\" target=\"_blank\">relationship in Wolfram|Alpha<\/a>. I entered the information I knew, and got a lovely chart that made everything clear: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/input\/?i=my+mother%27s+great-grandmother%27s+third+cousin+once+removed\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/2010\/06\/24-wolframalpha-small.jpg\" alt=\"My genealogical relationship to Ralph Waldo Emerson\" width=\"555\" height=\"358\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Depending upon how I described the relationship, I&#146;m  Emerson&#146;s 4th cousin 3 times removed or his 3rd cousin 5 times removed. <\/p>\n<p>Either way, it appears that I share a 1\/8192, or 0.012207%, blood relationship. We share a 13th degree of kinship, which apparently means <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prohibited_degree_of_kinship\" target=\"_blank\">I&#146;m free to marry him or serve on a jury<\/a> considering his fate. I don&#146;t think either of those situations is likely to arise. But enough of my poetic cousin. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wolframalpha.com\/2010\/06\/21\/my-cousins-cousins-nieces-grandfather-said-to-just-ask-wolframalpha\/\" target=\"_blank\">relationship query in Wolfram|Alpha<\/a> could be used in the classroom to help clarify family relationship students read about as well. If you&#146;re reading Faulkner, you may well need <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsr.olemiss.edu\/%7Eegjbp\/faulkner\/gen-index.html\" target=\"_blank\">complete family trees<\/a>.
