The example shown in the screenshot on the right outlines the six major characteristics of a technical document.<\/p>\n<p>As you flip through the pages of the textbook, these full-page graphics stand out, catching students\u2019 attention with their strong contrast and reader-friendly presentation of the information explored in more detail in the text.<\/p>\n<p>The textbook\u2019s \u201cPreface for Instructors\u201d explains the goal of this new feature:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"jive-quote\">\n<p>Reflecting the increasingly visual nature of today\u2019s learners and of technical communication itself, the Second Edition includes new \u201cThinking Visually\u201d graphics, developed with feedback from instructors. This feature provides an accessible, modern take on key principles and concepts throughout the text.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The feature this quick summary presents definitely stands out, even in a highly visual textbook like this one.<\/p>\n<p>[NOTE: The <span>\u201cThinking Visually\u201d \u00a0<\/span>infographics mentioned in this post are available in the short version of the text (mentioned above), \u00a0<em><a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.macmillan.com\/external-link.jspa?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.macmillanlearning.com%2FCatalog%2Fproduct%2Fpracticalstrategiesfortechnicalcommunication-thirdedition-markel%2F\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Practical Strategies for Technical Communication<\/a>.<\/em>They are <strong>not<\/strong> included in the full version of the text, \u00a0<em><a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.macmillan.com\/external-link.jspa?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.macmillanlearning.com%2FCatalog%2Fproduct%2Ftechnicalcommunication-twelfthedition-markel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Technical Communication<\/a><\/em>.]<\/p>\n<p>I decided to create my own infographic resources to persuade students to think visually about the concepts in <em><a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.macmillan.com\/external-link.jspa?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.macmillanlearning.com%2FCatalog%2Fproduct%2Ftechnicalcommunication-twelfthedition-markel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Technical Communication<\/a><\/em>. I\u2019m starting with documentation. Students struggle typically struggle with that topic, and its coverage in most textbooks is dense and text-heavy.<\/p>\n<p>I began with this page (shown as an image) on the question, \u201cWhy Use Documentation?\u201d It is also available as a <a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.macmillan.com\/external-link.jspa?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1V0XGZoO1S_uevnIv7Uexwxz39mLoIHGmZa4ITKTwtEU%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google Doc<\/a> or a <a class=\"jive-link-external-small\" href=\"https:\/\/community.macmillan.com\/external-link.jspa?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Ffile%2Fd%2F1WRiI3zEIr4e7xMVRlo319h8TqHsIWhG3%2Fview%3Fusp%3Dsharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">PDF<\/a> to provide full accessibility to students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tengrrl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/persuading-students-to-think-visually-with-infographics.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image of the Why Use Documentation? page\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tengrrl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/persuading-students-to-think-visually-with-infographics.jpg?resize=508%2C674\" width=\"508\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The three reasons that documentation is important listed in the resource come from the Appendix on \u201cDocumenting Your Sources.\u201d The infographic is rather simple, but I hope clear and direct\u2013just like those from <em>Practical Strategies for Technical Communication<\/em>.
