I remember taking a batch of Glazed Nut Bars to put out with the coffee and tea on the morning I gave my presentation to the Southwest Virginia Writing Project many years ago. I figured why not put everyone in a good mood before I even started talking. It worked so well that one of the questions I was asked after my presentation was &#8220;What&#8217;s the recipe?&#8221; Glazed Nut Bars are the twelfth<\/em><em> <em>of my 25 Cookies of Christmas<\/em>.  <\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ingredients\">\n<h4>Ingredients<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"ingredients\">\n<li>1 pkg white cake mix (any brand)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"centr\">&frac12;<\/span> cup brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 stick butter or margarine, melted <\/li>\n<li>1 egg, beaten <\/li>\n<li>1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts <\/li>\n<li>1 12-oz. bag semisweet chocolate chips <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"centr\">&frac14;<\/span> cup water <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<h4>Directions<\/h4>\n<ol class=\"instructions\">\n<li> Preheat oven to 350&deg;F.<\/li>\n<li>Spray 13&quot; x 9&quot; pan with nonstick spray. <\/li>\n<li>Mix cake mix and brown sugar. <\/li>\n<li>Add melted butter and beaten egg, mixing thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li>Reserve <span class=\"centr\">&frac14;<\/span> cup chocolate chips.<\/li>\n<li> Stir in nuts and remaining chocolate chips. <\/li>\n<li>Pour batter into prepared pan.<\/li>\n<li>Bake 30 to 35 minutes, until inserted toothpick comes out clean. <\/li>\n<li>Melt <span class=\"centr\">&frac14;<\/span> cup reserved chocolate chips with <span class=\"centr\">&frac14;<\/span> cup water, stirring to combine.<\/li>\n<li>While cookies still warm, top with  chocolate glaze, spreading to cover completely.<\/li>\n<li>Cool complete, and then cut into 24 bars.<\/li>\n<li>Store in a tightly covered container. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"variations\">\n<a name=\"variations\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Variations<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"variations\">\n<li>The nuts can be omitted for a nice chocolate chip bar cookie.<\/li>\n<li>The cookies can also be cut into 1&quot; squares for a petit fours look. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p class=\"duration\"><span class=\"hrlabel\">Time Required: <\/span><span class=\"hritem\">45  minutes<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p class=\"yield\"><span class=\"hrlabel\">Servings: <\/span><span class=\"hritem\">24 bars <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of recipes that begin with a box of cake mix&#8212;so much so that I&#8217;m sharing a week of cake-mix cookies.
