At that point, I thought pumpkins were useful only for pies at Thanksgiving. Little did I know! Thanks to the lovely lady I called Great Grandma Hahn, my mother&#8217;s father&#8217;s mother, for the memory and these tasty treats.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"summary\"><em>This is the first of 25 cookie recipes I&#8217;m posting to celebrate the Christmas holiday, but these pumpkin cookies are tasty any time of year!<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ingredients\">\n<h4>Ingredients<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"ingredients\">\n<li>&frac12; cup shortening<\/li>\n<li>&frac12; cup soft butter or oleo<\/li>\n<li>1 cup sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 egg<\/li>\n<li>1 cup pumpkin<\/li>\n<li>1 cup raisins<\/li>\n<li>&frac12; to 1 cup nutmeats (e.g., chopped walnuts)<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp vanilla<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp soda<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp baking powder<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>2 cups sifted flour<\/li>\n<li>1 can evaporated milk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<h4>Directions<\/h4>\n<ol class=\"instructions\">\n<li> Preheat oven to 375&deg;F. <\/li>\n<li>Place raisins in a saucepan and cover with water. <\/li>\n<li>Bring water and raisins to a boil over medium heat, and then drain and allow to cool.<\/li>\n<li>Cream together shortening, butter, sugar and egg in a mixing bowl. <\/li>\n<li>Add pumpkin, raisins, nutmeats and vanilla. <\/li>\n<li>Sift together soda, baking powder, cinnamon and flour.<\/li>\n<li>Add flour mixture (dry ingredients) to pumpkin mixture (wet ingredients). <\/li>\n<li>Drop by spoon onto greased cookie sheet and brush with canned milk. <\/li>\n<li>Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"variations\">\n<a name=\"variations\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Variations<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"variations\">\n<li> Any chopped nut can be used for the nutmeats&#8212;walnuts, pecans, and so forth.<\/li>\n<li>Skip the step of boiling raisins if you like.
